TO WELD OR NOT TO WELD....

To weld or not to weld linoleum / marmoleum flooring?
We explain that sometimes welding isn't required!

.....that's the question!

Net fit or weld Linoleum Floors

Net fit installation

Net fit installation

Marmoleum does not shrink over time when properly installed. That means welding, in the majority of cases, is not required. Skilled installers can make perfect joints without using a welding cord.

With a proper Marmoleum installation you will have a water resistant floor – one that can be cleaned with water, even when not welded.

If there is no specific requirement to weld, save yourself the time and money by having less steps and stick to the net fit seam installation.

BENEFITS OF NET FIT

● Improved aesthetics with no weld lines to disrupt the visual and accent the seams
● Improved environmental performance with substantial reduction in CO2 footprint by eliminating the use of a high wattage heat gun for installation of weld rods.
● Reduced overall installed cost and time

WHILE REMAINING
● Water resistant
● Bacteriostatic, 3rd party research shows that net fit seams are as hygienic as heat welded sheet vinyl.

WHEN IS WELDING USED?

Welding could be required or even prescribed in certain situations. Also local laws or regulations could make that you need to make sure you put a welding cord between two sheets.

There are many matching colours in our welding rods both in uni coloured and multi coloured. For design or decorative reasons a non matching colour is chosen so this welding cord is highlighting the floor.

Notes:
Linoleum should be welded at a temperature of approximately 300- 350° C. (see weld gun manual for setting details). Weld guns will vary so it is always advisable to practice weld techniques first on a piece of waste material in order to match the correct air gun temperature with welding speed.

The weld cable should be trimmed whilst warm using a spatula and slide, which will leave the weld cable approximately 0.5mm proud of the surface of the linoleum. As with vinyl, the weld cable will dish slightly as it cools. Wait until the material is cool before trimming the remaining surplus weld cable using a spatula angled slightly across the line of the seam.

Welding uni vs multicolour

Tools required

1. Hot air welding gun. For large areas, we strongly recommend using an automatic seam welding machine
2. Quick welding nozzle for 4mm welding rods
3. Electric grooving machine with hardened metal grooving blade, 3.5mm wide
4. Hand grooving tool, for areas inaccessible to the grooving machine.
5. Trimming slide or Mozart knife
6. A sharp crescent shape knife or Mozart knife
7. Marmoweld (round or square)
